What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment of breast tissue in men. Most develop excess tissue in their chest during adolescence with a resulting appearance similar to a woman’s breasts. This is an embarrassing condition that leads many men to seek plastic surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 27,760 men underwent breast reduction surgery in 2016 in the U.S.

Although the exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown, experts believe that it is caused by a hormonal imbalance or certain drugs containing estrogen. This condition accounts for roughly 65% of male breast disorders.
